چکیده

Density functional theory (DFT) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD) experiments have been used to probe the site preferences of adsorbed iodine atoms on Cu surfaces. DFT calculations are presented for iodine adsorption on Cu(1 1 1), Cu(1 0 0), Cu(2 2 1), Cu(5 3 3), Cu(5 3 1), and Cu(6 4 3). Additional DFT calculations are presented for I adsorption on a stepped Cu surface that mimics a thermally roughened Cu(6 4 3) surface. The molecular desorption of R-3-methylcyclohexanone from clean and iodine precovered Cu(6 4 3) has been used to experimentally examine the location of iodine on this surface. Our results show that there is a strong energetic preference for iodine to adsorb at step edges on Cu surfaces vicinal to Cu(1 1 1) and that when kinks are present in surface steps, iodine prefers to adsorb in the vicinity of these kinks over adsorbing along straight step edges. Thus, the adsorption of atomic iodine can be used to selectively titrate the kink sites on intrinsically chiral Cu surfaces vicinal to Cu(1 1 1). 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Enantiospecific Adsorption of (R)-3-Methylcyclohexanone on Naturally Chiral Surfaces Vicinal to Cu(110)

R)-3-methylcyclohexanone (R-3MCHO) has been shown to adsorb enantiospecifically on naturally chiral Cu surfaces vicinal to the Cu(110) plane. Adsorption of R-3MCHO on seven Cu single crystal surfaces vicinal to (110) was studied using temperature programmed desorption. These surfaces include Cu(110), Cu(771), Cu(430), Cu(13,9,1) and Cu(651). The Cu(13,9,1) and Cu(651) surfaces are naturally chi...

Enantiospecific Adsorption of (R)-3-Methylcyclohexanone on Naturally Chiral Cu(531) Surfaces

The enantiospecific adsorption and desorption of (R)-3-methylcyclohexanone on naturally chiral Cu(531) surfaces was studied using temperature programmed desorption. The Cu(531) surfaces are of interest because they lie at the center of the stereographic triangle and thus, have the highest density of chiral adsorption sites possible on the surface of a face centered cubic metal. Several (R)-3-me...

Adsorbate Induced Kink Formation in Straight Step Edges on Cu(5 3 3) and Cu(2 2 1)

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD) measurements have revealed that the straight step edges of Cu(5 3 3) surfaces are reconstructed by the room temperature adsorption of R-3methylcyclohexanone (R-3-MCHO). STM and low energy electron diffraction (LEED) investigations have shown that the clean Cu(5 3 3) surface is composed of arrays of narrow (1 1 1) te...

Enantiospecific adsorption of cysteine at chiral kink sites on Au(110)-(1 x 2).

Enantiospecific adsorption of cysteine molecules onto chiral kink sites on the Au(110)-(1x2) surface was observed by scanning tunneling microscopy. l- and d-cysteine dimers were found to adopt distinctly different adsorption geometries at S kinks, which can be understood from the need to reach specific, optimum molecule-substrate interaction points. Extended, homochiral domains of l/d-cysteine ...

Enantioselective separation on naturally chiral metal surfaces: D,L-aspartic acid on Cu(3,1,17)(R&S) surfaces.

Homochirality of amino acids, sugars, proteins, and DNA is one of the biochemical hallmarks of life on Earth. Its origins have been debated for decades. Given that minerals such as quartz were probably the first enantiomerically pure materials on Earth, it has been suggested that such materials served as chiral substrates for enantiospecific surface chemistry. Enantiospecific adsorption on the ...
